An hour of hand embroidery should not leave your hands and shoulders aching. This beechwood embroidery hoop stand takes the weight of the hoop off your hands, so you can stitch with both of them — one above the fabric, one below — and keep going for as long as the light lasts.

It works two ways from the same base. Set it on a table and it is a tabletop embroidery stand. Lay the base flat on your chair, sit on the wide end, and it becomes a sit-on lap stand: your own weight holds it steady, so you can stitch in an armchair or on the sofa with no desk and nothing clamped to the furniture. The hoop is held by a wooden thumb screw that grips the rim, which means it takes the ordinary wooden hoops you already own rather than a hoop of its own.

Product Details

  • Material: natural beech wood, polished and finished, with metal fittings
  • Base: 46 x 23 cm (18.11 x 9.05 in), contoured along one edge so it tucks under your thigh when you sit on it
  • Height: adjustable up to 67 cm (26.5 in) above the base
  • Arms: four jointed, rotating arms — height, reach and angle all adjust independently
  • Rotation: 360 degrees at the base swivel and 360 degrees at the hoop clamp
  • Hoop clamp: wooden thumb screw that tightens onto the rim of the hoop, and takes a rim up to 2.5 cm (1 in) thick
  • Base underside: non-slip foot, so it stays put on a polished table
  • Storage: folds flat, no tools needed
  • In the box: 1 x embroidery hoop stand, 1 x magnetic needle minder, 1 x instruction sheet
  • Hoop: not included — the stand is made to hold the hoops already in your basket

How It Works

Slide the rim of your hoop into the slot in the clamp at the top of the arm and turn the wooden thumb screw until it grips. The slot takes a rim up to 2.5 cm (1 in) thick, which covers standard wooden hoops with room to spare. That is the whole setup — no adaptor, no proprietary fitting, no tools. Because the clamp closes on the hoop's edge rather than on a mount built into it, it accepts ordinary wooden embroidery hoops in the sizes you already have.

The four arms fold and unfold like a desk lamp, so you set the height, how far the work sits from your body, and the tilt of the hoop, all independently. Once the joints are snugged up they hold their position while you pull thread through, instead of drooping and making you brace against them.

Both ends turn a full circle. The clamp rotates 360 degrees, so you can flip the hoop face-down to bury a thread end or start a new one and then turn it straight back — without unclamping and re-tensioning. The base swivels 360 degrees, so you can move the whole piece toward the window without moving the stand.

Who It's For

It suits anyone who stitches for longer than their hands comfortably allow: hand embroidery, cross stitch, needlepoint and punch needle all work the same way, because all four hold the fabric in a hoop. It is particularly worth having if you stitch away from a desk — in an armchair, on the sofa, in a hospital chair, on a car journey — since the sit-on base means you are not looking for a table edge to clamp to.

It is also a sensible gift for a stitcher who already has hoops, precisely because it does not force them to switch to a new hoop system.

A seated stitcher using the embroidery hoop stand as a sit-on lap stand, with the wooden base laid on the chair beneath her leg and the arm rising between her knees to hold the hoop at chest height

How This Compares

Against lap and seat stands built around their own hoop: many sit-on stands come with a fitted hoop and only really work with that hoop, which means your existing collection sits in a drawer. This one clamps the hoop by its rim, so you can swap between the hoop sizes you already own without changing anything on the stand.

Against stands that hold the hoop with a spring clip: a thumb screw tightens as far as you turn it and stays there. It is the difference between a hoop that holds its angle while you pull a stitch through and one that creeps.

Against a floor stand: a floor stand gives you more reach, and it also needs permanent floor space beside your chair, plus a separate head bought to match your frame. This folds flat and goes in a drawer between sessions, and works on a table as well as on your lap.

Against a table-only stand: the same stand does both jobs. You are not choosing between stitching at the dining table and stitching in the armchair.

Sizing, Materials & Care

The frame is natural beech, chosen for needlework stands because it is dense enough not to flex under tension and takes a smooth finish that will not catch fine thread or silk. Every surface is polished, and the joints are finished to resist the splitting and warping that softwood stands develop after a season or two.

Wipe it with a dry or barely damp cloth and keep it out of standing water — it is unfinished-look natural wood, not a sealed outdoor timber. If a joint starts to move under load after heavy use, turn its thumb screw a little tighter; nothing needs glue or replacing. Fold it flat to store it, and it will sit under a sofa or in a project bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an embroidery stand?
If you stitch for more than half an hour at a time, it changes the session. Holding a hoop means one hand is permanently occupied and your shoulder is doing static work the whole time; a stand frees both hands so you can pass the needle down with one and receive it with the other, which is faster as well as more comfortable. Stitchers who take up a stand usually report they can work longer before stopping. We go into the why at length in Why Your Neck and Hands Hurt After Embroidery.

Which hoops does it fit?
The wooden embroidery hoops you already own. The clamp grips the hoop by its rim rather than by a fitting built into the hoop, and it opens to take a rim up to 2.5 cm (1 in) thick — comfortably more than a standard wooden hoop needs. Swapping between the hoops you own is a matter of loosening the thumb screw and changing them over. It is sold as the stand alone, so you are not paying again for hoops you have.

What is the most popular embroidery hoop size?
Six and eight inch hoops are the everyday sizes most stitchers reach for. Because this stand clamps the rim rather than fitting a hoop of its own, changing size means loosening the thumb screw and swapping the hoop over — you are not committed to one size for the life of the stand.

What makes a good stand for embroidery hoops?
Four things, in order: a clamp that genuinely grips rather than pinches; independent adjustment of height, reach and angle so you bring the work to your body instead of leaning into it; joints that hold their setting under thread tension; and a base that suits where you actually stitch. This stand answers all four with a thumb-screw clamp, four jointed arms, 360 degree rotation at both ends, and a base that works on a table or under you on a chair.

Can I use it away from a table?
Yes — that is what the flat base is for. Lay it on your chair or sofa seat, sit on the wide end, and your weight anchors it. The contoured edge sits against your leg rather than under it. On a table, the same base sits on its non-slip foot and needs no clamping.

How high does it go?
Up to 67 cm (26.5 in) above the base, and it adjusts continuously below that, so you can bring the hoop to eye level at a table or set it low and close when you are sitting on it. The four jointed arms let you change the reach and the tilt without changing the height.

Set it up once, and the next hour of stitching belongs to your hands rather than to holding the hoop.

I wasn’t aware that my item had shipped because the order status just read “order confirmed,” so I was pleasantly surprised when it showed up 7 days after ordering (for Alaska that’s fast shipping!) I have only been using it since this morning and I already love it, it is a total game changer. If you’re on the fence, order it!

I can finally stop getting weird wrist cramps from holding my embroidery hoop for hours on end - this is the perfect device for holding it for me while I work! Highly recommend.

Game changer doing my cross stitch. Wish I bought it sooner! Easy to assemble. Getting the hoop secured at first was definitely a learning curve

I am so happy I chose this stand. It was super easy to put together with clearly labeled parts and instructions. It works so well and it's so nice to have a free hand while embroidering. My cats also like that they can be on my lap while I work.

First assembly tool a little curve in a couple spots but nothing bad.
Was a big help with finishing my most recent piece. Can adjust it both very tight and still or loose enough to easily adjust on the fly But still fairly steady. Also collapses fairly small when not using it.

A extremely well made hoop stand. I have about 5 different ones but this one is my favorite. Went together well. My son put it together and commented on how well it is made. Glad I got it.

The instructions for assembly need improvement when it comes to the last hoop holding clamp- workable

Wow! This is impressive! Designed well. Easy assembly. Metal in holes of wooden nuts prevent stripping that can occur in cheap versions. Collapses easily for storage. Can also use as a table-top stand.

One of the pieces came broken, but the customer service was wonderful and helpful. They were able to replace the broken piece! I am so happy to do my embroidery with this stand. It makes it so much easier to embroider! I would certainly recommend buying from this shop and buying the embroidery stand. :)

Good quality wood. Does not hold the position you place it in. Does not tighten enough to keep in place.

Works exactly as I hoped! Makes stitching for long periods of time much easier on my hands! I love being able to flip the hoop so I can see the back of it and easily fix any tangles; that’s next to impossible with some stands.

I am loving this so far! It helps take some of the stress of my hands since I don’t have to hold my hoop! The seller responded VERY quickly to all the questions I had as well.

This has been a game changer for my embroidery! I love that I can use it while on the couch/in bed by sitting on the wooden base, or use it at the table by setting the whole thing in the table top. It is so versatile! Quality wood, easy to put together, and shipped fast! Definitely recommend!!

gift for a friend. She loves it.

I haven't put the frame together yet, so cannot comment on the quality, although the appearance is very nice and seems good quality.
The packaging was poor and was damaged in transit. The polthythene wrapping was torn and the box dented. The box was unsealed, so it is possible that components could have fallen out.
The delivery from Evri was way below the standard expected. We had notifications of delivery dates, which did not materialise. The notifications we then got related to an item purchased from elsewhere, which had already been delivered. I was disappointed that the seller expected me to deal with Evri myself.

Gift for my daughter’s birthday. Works great sitting down.
